Van Helsing:  The London Assignment – 3 out of 5

After revisiting Van Helsing (check out the review here), I decided to go back and watch the animated short film that acts as a prequel to the live-action feature called Van Helsing:  The London Assignment.  Unlike the horrible live-action film, this one I never saw.  Considering it is only a half an hour long, I figured I wasn’t giving up too much of my free time to give this one a shot.  Surprisingly, it is better than the live-action film...but would I call it a good film?

It looks like a Castlevania property...but nowhere near as cool.

After a string of deaths with some potential supernatural elements occur in London, Gabriel Van Helsing (Hugh Jackman) and the friar Carl (David Wenham) head out to investigate.  It turns out that Dr. Jekyll (Dwight Schultz) has been committing the murders as his alter-ego Mr. Hyde (Robbie Coltane).  The murders are being done in order to capture the souls of the victims and then used to create a potion that promises eternal life.  He intends to use the potion on Queen Victoria (Kate Beckinsale).  Now Van Helsing must stop the mad scientist and save the Queen.

I do like that Hyde didn't come off like a Shrek knockoff in this one.
Even though he wasn't green, he sure felt like a wannabe Shrek in the
live-action film.

Wow!  They sure (didn't) capture the likeness of
Hugh Jackman.

Possibly due to the short length, The London Assignment is able to avoid all the flaws that made the live-action film pretty much unwatchable.  The story feels has a flow to it and is actually somewhat interesting and not meandering or feeling like it is just a thrown together vehicle for forgettable action, the cast actually feels like they are trying and the performances are pretty decent, and the action is far more exciting.  Hell, even the animation and designs look great!  However, it realistically is only better by comparison because, as a product on its own, it’s kinda meh and not very memorable.

We are not amused.

While the story feels infinitely more focused and way less chaotic and messy when compared to the live-action film, it is, honestly, not that interesting and engaging.  If this animated feature was an episode of a TV series based on the movie, this one would feel like a throwaway, monster of the week episode that was farted out in order to get up to the ordered number of episodes.  Even the action, while improved, is never really that exciting or memorable.  In fact, forgettable probably best describes this entire product.

Quite a slobberknocker we got here.

I went into Van Helsing:  The London Assignment with visions of the live-action movie dancing in my head.  I fully expected to see a loud, obnoxious feature that feels like it is going nowhere fast and filled with some weak-sauce acting.  Surprisingly, it wasn’t that.  While not a great animated feature, it was definitely a marked improvement from its following tale.

Friar Carl still wasn't funny in this.
