Murder on the Orient Express – 3 out of 5
I have never read an Agatha Christie novel. I have nothing against her, but I’ve just never took a dive into her fandom. That being said, I’ve also never seen a single adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express (this being the fourth adaptation). I will say, the trailer did make this 2017 feature look interesting and it made me realize that even Poirot fans are no stranger to the typical fandom kneejerk reactions of immediately hating any adaptation of the thing you claim to love. People I know who love Christie’s novels were instantly raging about Poirot’s facial hair not being what they wanted it to be. Since I knew very little about the character and the author, I had no clue what was going on…and, honestly, still don’t. Anyway, I decided to give this one a shot and found it to be okay but not great enough for me to put the comic books and video game controller down and pick up a Christie mystery.

Honestly, a high point of the film is the fact Depp is barely in it. |
Famous detective; Hercule Poirot (Kenneth Branagh), after solving a crime in Jerusalem, hops aboard the Orient Express in order to head back to London. Thirteen other individuals are on the train with him and one individual; a businessman named Edward Ratchett (Johnny Depp), is concerned for his safety and asks Poirot to be his bodyguard during the journey. The detective ultimately declines the offer and, that night, Ratchett is murdered. Now Poirot must examine the evidence and investigate the other passengers and figure out who is responsible for the crime.

I won’t argue that Murder on the Orient Express is a bad movie because it has a lot of great things to it. However, with that being said, I won’t argue that I loved the film. The movie looks amazing and the large cast made up of some very talented people like Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Michelle Pfeiffer, Daisy Ridley, and so much more, are all doing absolutely incredible. Additionally, Branagh (who also directed the film) is terrific in the lead. Finally, the mystery is interesting and the “whodunit” aspect is genuinely engaging. Sadly though, this one just couldn’t get its hocks in me completely and I ultimately found the film to be more decent and good for only a single viewing rather than anything more illustrious.

I felt obligated to include a screenshot of Dame Judi Dench in this review. Why? Because it is Dame Judi Dench. I almost feel obligated to include images of her for movies she is not in. |
So, despite this movie having a lot of great things working in its favor, the story just never fully sucked me in, and I partially don’t understand why. The mystery itself is not without its intrigue and the characters are all complex and dynamic, so this murder mystery really should have been engaging. However, there was an almost sterile approach to the way the mystery unfolded. While it was interesting to a point, I kinda felt like the reveals were never that momentous (with the exception of the very end, which was truly enthralling). When small details started to come to life, they sorta felt humdrum to me. There was a feeling of adhering to a routine when these reveals started to take place and there was no sense of intrigue to them. It sorta felt like, “Here’s a reveal, now let’s make our way to the next one.” That isn’t to say the film doesn’t have flair to its storytelling because Branagh definitely delivered some moments that were wholly engaging and fun to watch but too much of the film felt like…well…it was on a train track and just making its way to the next routine stop.

The director sure gave himself some great closeups. |

I'm not trying to be snarky. He really did some legit great closeups of himself. |
Murder on the Orient Express for me, ultimately, was an okay movie. I didn’t think it was utterly awful when it ended but I wasn’t completely wowed or fully enthralled with it either. Despite having a great cast all giving terrific performances and some visuals that are legitimately gorgeous to look at, I ended up finding this one to be a movie that was fine enough to check out once but not entertaining enough to ever feel the need to visit again.
