Get on Up – 4 out of 5
I honestly never knew for a couple of years that there was a biopic about James Brown. It wasn’t until around the time Black Panther came out that I looked at Chadwick Boseman’s (rest in peace) filmography and discovered this film. I’m not sure how I never knew about this one because I like Brown’s music. Well, I finally sat down with Get On Up and found an absolutely astounding biopic about one of the funkiest performers to ever exist!

He's gonna get in the hot tub! |
Born into poverty with mother who would go on to leave him and an abusive father in the backwoods of Georgia, James Brown (Boseman) would use his struggles as a child to get into music and go onto to become a legend. Get on Up shows his journey, his tests, his highs and lows, and everything in between that forged and formed him into the Godfather of Soul.

Brown is literally a rags to riches story. |
So, that synopsis of the film kinda stunk. To be honest, it is a little difficult to really surmise this film because it isn’t a linear biopic about Brown. The film jumps around from his youth to his older days to his rise in fame and, to top it all off, Boseman’s Brown is constantly breaking the fourth wall and speaking directly to the viewer. It’s not a complicated or a new way to tell a story but it is a formula that turn a potential “by-the-numbers” biopic into something commanding and as engaging to witness as the legend himself.

He's got soul...and he's super bad! |

Now can we get a Little Richard biopic with Brandon Mychal Smith reprising his role from this one? Because he was great! |
With a story that is told in this ultra-compelling way and a soundtrack filled with some of the best of the best Brown has made in his career, the film is already a near total win. The only thing that can ruin it is a lead star that can’t sell the reality that they are James Brown. Thankfully, the movie doesn’t run into this as Chadwick Boseman’s portrayal is so authentic feeling that I was instantly sold on him being the performing legend. The way he moved, the way he carried himself, the way he spoke made it feel like he was embodying everything that made James Brown the man he was, and it was awesome to watch and made the film absolutely enthralling.

Arrested for being too funky...and for also committing a real crime. |
Concerning drawbacks, I really didn’t find many for this film. The only thing that really held this movie back for me is the replay value. It is a great movie with an enthralling story but, as much as I like Brown’s music and love funking it up as I have it playing in the background while I cook dinner and dance in embarrassingly white ways, I can’t see myself watching this movie very often. However, this really isn’t a knock on Get on Up because, in reality, I can’t think of a single biopic feature that is something I can watch over and over again or even have on a semi-normal rotation.

Dan Aykroyd immediately started telling him about interdimensional aliens infiltrating the music industry or some weird bullshit he likes to spout off about. |
Get on Up could have easily been your typical biopic and just showed you the famous figure through the years and all the ups and downs that made them what they are. If it was just that, it still could have been a great movie because of the person it is focusing on. However, the story decides to present itself in a unique and incredibly engaging way and when that is combined with a stellar performance from Chadwick Boseman, you are left with a biopic that commanded and demanded attention in the same way the subject of this movie would. Sure, the film embellishes things and even makes up some minor story points in order to create something more dramatic and attention-grabbing, but biopic aren’t historical documents and their main priority is entertainment…and this one nailed that priority.
