Get Duked! – 4 out of 5
I randomly stumbled upon Get Duked! thanks to an Amazon ad on Facebook (thanks, Targeted Ads!). The trailer didn’t wow me, but it promised a dark comedy (which I enjoy) but, more importantly, it had Eddie Izzard in it. I love Eddie and when I saw she was a part of the film I was convinced to watch it. Well, I checked it out and definitely enjoyed it!

Poor kids. Forced to be outdoors. That's my hell. |
Dean (Rian Gordon), Duncan (Lewis Gribben) and DJ Beatroot (Viraj Juneja) are three problem students that are forced to try and win the Duke of Edinburgh Award, a program that involves making it through the highlands as a team and using only a map as guidance. Along for the journey is one student, Ian (Samuel Bottomley), who is there for the actual achievement, not as a punishment. Their teacher, Mr. Carlyle (Jonathan Aris), drops them off and instructs them to meet at a certain campsite; however, as the boys struggle to navigate the terrain, they learn that they are being hunted by a strange man in a mask that they’ve decided is the Duke of Edinburgh (Eddie Izzard). Now the boys must find their way through the highlands and try to survive as a madman with a gun is out for their heads.

Get Duked! is kinda slow to start. While the beginning does do a great job at establishing the overall presentation that the film is going to take, the story takes a bit before it gets to its dark humor and conflict. However, once this film gets going and finds its stride, it is very entertaining and a great example of a dark comedy.

It's nice seeing kids put down their phones and just live in the moment. |
The story presents itself in a flashy way, especially when illicit substances comes into play within the tale. Often in the story, drug use arrives, and the visuals take on a wild and trippy approach and these moments are not only wicked and amusing but helps give this film a unique atmosphere all its own. The dark comedy tone is here and there are those great moments that are uncomfortably funny because they explore violence and shock at an amusing angle but the trippy sequences helped give this film a vibe that feels original and sorta keeps it from feeling like your run-of-the-mill dark comedy. And when these scenes are accompanied by some truly fantastic hip-hop tracks, it only makes the sequences greater.

I wish I could scowl as intensely as James Cosmo is in this still. |
The performances in the film are pretty great and they are able to key in on the film’s tone and tale perfectly. I’ve never seen the four main characters before but their performances as Dean, Duncan DJ Beatroot, and Ian were a lot of fun, felt incredibly authentic, and also were easy to sympathize with and get invested in. More recognizable names like Jonathan Aris, James Cosmo and Kat Dickie (the last two both most notably were in Game of Thrones) helped add more depth to the cast and also to the characters building up the tale. Aris’ journey as the teacher taking the boys out to the highlands is wild and he nails the unique challenges presented in a very humorous way, Cosmo plays a local farmer who gets involved with the boy’s journey, and Dickie plays a cop following the boys and thinking there is something else going on and all three of them are a blast to watch and each of them know what levels to bring their characters and use them at for the most effective laughs. Finally, Eddie Izzard, the reason behind me watching this, is great. Granted, her character is mostly at a distance from the boys and is a threat looming on the horizon but when we get to see Izzard show off her chops, she is absolutely enthralling to watch as this story’s antagonist.

There are some really great moments with Kat Dickie. |
There is a simplicity to Get Duked! that makes it easy to engage with. It’s basically a tale about survival as this strange gun wielding mad man in a mask hunts some youths. However, the film makes excellent use of its premise for some dark laughs, trippy visuals, and a great soundtrack to accompany the madness you are seeing. Add in the fun performances and this movie proved to be very entertaining. Finally, this movie has a killer moment in the end that had a great setup and a terrific payoff.
