Black Widow – 5 out of 5
Here’s a shocker, Rev. Ron is giving another glowing review to an MCU movie. If you follow this blog or know me personally, I am a HUGE fan of the MCU. I’ve been a Marvel fan for as long as I can remember (don’t get me wrong, I like DC, but I’ve always put Marvel first) and Kevin Feige’s experiment of a shared cinematic universe of these comic characters was a dream come true for me. I could wax poetically about my love of the MCU all day long and getting to finally get back in the theater and experience the MCU on the big screen for the first time in two years filled me with so much joy! Also, it was just nice to get back in a theater after an entire year. Well, after constant delays due to the pandemic, Natasha Romanoff finally got her solo adventure with Black Widow after debuting in the shared universe 11 years ago in Iron Man 2 and I freaking loved it!

Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson); the Black Widow, is on the run from the authorities. After violating the Sokovia Accords, she is hunted by U.S. Secretary of State Thaddeus Ross (William Hurt) but while she is in hiding, here “sister” Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) sends her a package that reveals that the notorious Red Room, a facility that turned both Natasha and Yelena into assassins, is still in operation and still run by a man named Dreykov (Ray Winstone)—a man Natasha once believed she killed and did so in order to try and escape her past and join S.H.I.E.L.D. She also learns that not only is Dreykov still engineering young girls to become killing machines in new and dangerous ways, but he also has a new secret weapon in the form of Taskmaster; an assassin capable of mimicking the fighting styles of other people. Now Natasha and Yelena are out to shut the Red Room down once and for all and save all the women who are currently being mind controlled to be a part of it. However, to do so, they need to enlist the help of former Russian undercover agents who once posed as their parents; the super-soldier Alexei Shostakov (David Harbour) and the brilliant Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz).

Marvel Studios I can't wait to see where Yelena goes in the MCU. |
MCU films just hit all the right notes for me and are incredibly satisfying to me. Not to mention, seeing the comics universe replicated and where all these heroes from all walks of life come together and exist in the same universe is just plain awesome-sauce to me. While it stunk that Black Widow kept getting delayed (and I did my best to never complain about this because I truly understood it was for the best for both the public’s health and from a business standpoint), I have to say that the film was worth the wait. The tone has that great and tried and true Marvel formula of being fun and emotional, the action is incredibly memorable, and it does this great job of telling a contained story that exists within the larger universe and is able to set up new characters and tease future projects without feeling like the film is nothing but a springboard for what is coming next. To put it simply, Black Widow is just another example of why I love these movies so much.

Marvel Studios Sisters are doing it for themselves. |
One thing that Marvel Studios does so well with their films is explore the idea of what it means to be a family. Black Widow continues this tradition as Natasha wrestles with the idea of being a family to the Avengers and to the people who posed as their parents and the person she once thought of as her sister. It explores these themes in an emotional way but, like a lot of Marvel films, it doesn’t get too sappy thanks to its use of humor. The story also does a tremendous job of giving us more insight into the past of Black Widow. We get to see more moments from her past and how these moments forged her. What is impressive about this is how natural and authentic this exploration feels because it never comes off like her past is being retconned or like backstory is being jammed and crammed in as it attempts to force it to fit with what we’ve seen. The story also allowed for some interesting exploration about freedom of choice and how the Red Room robs women of that and turns them into walking machines of death. This element then ends up playing into the concept of the family you make and the one you choose, so, as far as themes and exploration go, this movie is really playing with some interesting ideas and exploring them in entertaining and intriguing ways.

Marvel Studios There is actually very little red in this room. The title is misleading. |
Next up, the action in this film is top notch and incredibly exciting. Whether it is the small, up close and personal fight scenes or the bigger, more explosion-y sequences, Black Widow has some extremely memorable action sequences. One thing Marvel Studios does really well is treat their action sequences like they are part of the story and not just destinations for the story to get to. The story never got boring to me, so I never found myself just waiting for the next explosion sequence. This ended up with that great blend the company can create and that is create an action film that feels like everything outside the action is also important and not just filler and this made for another Marvel film that had a great pace and flowed really well. In fact, it flowed so well that the over two hour running length just flew by (that’s another thing Marvel Studios does really well as their films have never felt their running length).

Another element that I really liked was how this Phase Four film was able to tell a story that is in the time period of Phase Three and not feel like it is navigating a mine field in order for it to work. Basically, I’m saying that Black Widow feels like it fit extremely well in the overall picture of the MCU. At no point did I feel like the film was accidentally retconning anything we’ve already seen or already know in the MCU and even the little moments that set up stuff we see in Infinity War felt like a welcomed way of completing things rather than needless setup and origins. It really proved that Marvel Studios has the capabilities to go backwards and tell more stories from the already established timeline and make them work. I've also seen a lot of reviews criticize that the film has no stakes because we already know that Natasha will live since we've already seen how she dies but I never felt like this was a drawback. I was along for the ride and didn't feel like I was waiting for the destination, so knowing that she will live because she will later sacrificed herself wasn't really something I had an issue with.

Marvel Studios Harbour, it's nice to see you in a good comicbook movie for once. |
Finally, the cast is this one is just awesome. ScarJo is still badass and a lot of fun as Black Widow and she continues to really embody the character. Florence Pugh and David Harbour almost steal the entire movie as Yelena and Alexei respectively. Both are so entertaining. Pugh is a great snarky badass and Harbour is so funny and charming as the near dimwit but big hearted Alexei. O-T Fagbenle isn’t in the film a lot, but I liked his portrayal of Mason, an alley of Natasha who helps get her supplies. He is able to portray so much history between the two with his performance and I honestly would love to see him show up in the future of the MCU. Ray Winstone isn’t in the film much but the man is such an imposing figure with an incredible presence that even in his limited scope he commands attention. Lastly, Rachel Weisz as Melina was a terrific addition to the cast. She captures the spirit of the espionage undertones of the movie and even has some genuinely sweet moments with her “family” and some amusing moments with David Harbour. However, she is the one drawback I had for the film and that is I wanted to see more of her and wanted her to have a bigger part in the overall tale. Ultimately though, I found her great and the entire cast to be tremendous.

Marvel Studios More Weisz is never a bad thing. |
So, no surprise, I loved Black Widow. As per ushe, the film delivered the fun and excitement I wanted, and any drawbacks are small and negligible. It told a great story that centered on one of the original MCU Avengers, and the character more than deserved it. It also gave a nice tease for a future product coming out and opened up the possibilities for the MCU to take a step back and explore some other unspoken moments that took place during the first three phases. While WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki might have been the official start to Phase Four, Black Widow did a great job of kicking off the movie side of things with this new MCU phase.
