A Quiet Place Part II – 4 out of 5

I really enjoyed A Quiet Place.  John Krasinski directed a hell of a horror film as it not only had this incredibly tense atmosphere but also had heart to it and an emotional story.  Last year, I was all prepared to see its sequel; A Quiet Place Part II.  I preordered my ticket when they went on sale and then the pandemic hit the shores.  This movie ended up getting delayed.  In fact, it was the delay of this film and the announcement that Tom Hanks got the virus that really showed me that this wasn’t just another localized epidemic that we’ve seen in the past.  So, after a year of waiting and numerous delays to all the films thanks to the pandemic (which, we still are in, mind you), this feature was finally released.  I didn’t check it out in the theater but caught it now that it is available to stream and really enjoyed it!

Hey, remember this guy?  The one that died in the first film?
Oh, I just made myself sad.

It’s been over a year since mysterious creatures have invaded the world and decimated the population but survivors Evelyn Abbott (Emily Blunt), her deaf daughter Regan (Millicent Simmonds), her young son Marcus (Noah Jupe), and her newborn baby, were able to discover the weakness in the blind monsters with hypersensitive hearing.  With knowledge on how to beat them and a desire to leave behind the home that she shared with her husband Lee (Krasinski), Evelyn and the group head out in search of a new home and other survivors.  In an abandoned foundry, they find Emmett (Cillian Murphy)—a man they knew before the creatures destroyed the world.  In the foundry, Regan discovers a radio signal playing a song on a loop and she believes it is a message being sent by other survivors.  With the help of Emmett, they set out to discover the truth while Evelyn remains behind with the rest of her children, ready to protect them from the creatures lurking outside.

It stepped on a Lego.

"Ask me if I'm playing Sue Storm again!"

A Quiet Place Part IIis doing what a great sequel does:  It isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel and do something dramatically different (although, that sometimes works) but it isn’t just repeating what came before.  The story does a great job of opening up the world and developing this silent universe and even shedding new light on its beginnings.  Right off the bat, the film takes the viewers back to the day it all started.  We get to see the Abbotts in relative normalcy and living in a world where you weren’t terrified that a fart might be a death sentence.  This is nice because we get to see Lee again and we get an origin to the madness, but it also really cements everything that has been lost.  This is then carried over to the Abbotts leaving behind their self-created normal life they tried to cling to but ultimately weren’t able to keep.  In the previous film, there are hints of other survivors trying to make it, but the story is mainly focused on the Abbotts.  In this film, we are introduced to Emmett and see that there truly are others out there and they are making their own unique way in the broken world.

Emmett, seen here trying to do this world's deadliest game, Pull My Finger.

The creatures made the trains run on time...and
by that, I mean everyone is dead so no one needed
to ride the trains.

What is impressive is how this film is able to expand the world but not rob it of the intimacy that the first film had.  We get new characters and get to learn about them, but we don’t lose seeing the original crew develop and grow.  The film also doesn’t lose the atmosphere and tension that the last film had.  While I will admit that I didn’t think this one was as intense, it still had some really great moments of terror.  The movie even switches up a little and provides some really big mayhem moments in the opening as all hell breaks loose when the creatures arrive.

The creatures are basically a metaphor for that asshole neighbor we've
all had that thinks everyone has to be quiet for solely their sake.

The performances in the film are fantastic as the returning players all do a tremendous job of getting back on the saddle of the characters they played in 2018 and, at the same time, showing a little growth to them as they developed.  Once again, Millicent Simmonds is the one who steals the movie as she is so captivating to watch.  Matching Simmonds is a truly awesome performance from Cillian Murphy.  He does this incredible job of showing casing a truly broken and jaded man, as well as containing this terrific balance of maybe or maybe not being someone that the Abbotts can trust.

They would say something cool but they don't want to draw out
the monsters.

A Quiet Place Part II keeps the quality that the first film delivered and expanded on the world where monsters lash out and destroy everything that makes a sound.  The only real downside I had for the film was I didn't think it was as scary as the previous film but that really didn't hold this one back as an overall entertaining movie.  The story is filled with emotion, the atmosphere is tense, and the performances are terrific.  The feature also holds a lot of promise for more stories from this world and I would love to see what else this franchise has in store.
