Werewolves Within – 4 out of 5

I like Sam Richardson.  I discovered him on Detroiters and quickly became a fan.  Recently, I decided to do a Richardson Double Feature by watching The Tomorrow War (read the review here) and Werewolves Within.  WW I’ve seen promoted and talked about for a bit on sites like The A.V. Club and it definitely got my interest.  First off, Richardson is the lead, also Milana Vayntrub was in it, also it is a dark comedy and I love those, and it also looked really good.  I didn’t realize that it was based on a video game but, regardless, I checked it out and I really enjoyed this one!

With these two in the leads, this movie is already in good hands.

Hee hee.  Look at the town's name.  Ha ha.
Field.

Finn Wheeler (Richardson) is a forest ranger that has been reassigned to a small, isolated town called Beaverfield.  Once there, he quickly becomes close to the town’s mail carrier Cecily Moore (Vayntrub).  The first night, a snowstorm kills the power to the entire town and all the residents move into the small lodge where Wheeler is staying.  The next morning, Wheeler discovers that all the generators in town have been destroyed and a body of the lodge owner’s husband is found.  As fear starts to grip the residents, rumors start to swirl that a werewolf is lurking in the darkness.  Now the question becomes:  Is there really a werewolf and, if there is, who in the town is the werewolf?

Fingers grown back.  He'll be fine.
Fingers do grow back, right?

If you got werewolves, he's the man for the job...
maybe.  Or maybe not.  He is just a forest  ranger
and I don't think they train rangers for
werewolves.

Werewolves Within is one of those great examples of dark comedies that has the perfect blend of both the horror and comedy genre.  I was absolutely impressed with how the film is able to both feel like a very amusing comedy and a really foreboding horror feature—and it does so without feeling like it is jumping back and forth between these tones but rather having them coexist.  And not only is this film doing justice to both the horror realm and comedy front, the movie also plays around superbly with an underlying mystery element.  One of the strongest aspects of the film, for me, is the idea the story is selling that there might not actually be a werewolf and what you are witnessing is just the paranoia of the townspeople.  Werewolves Within is doing this tremendous job of constantly sowing doubt that we will see the namesake of the film actually become a reality but, at the same time, it is providing the argument that there is still a chance that we will see a werewolf come into play.  This dynamic and this perfectly constructed atmosphere of horror and humor resulted in a movie that got its hooks in me quickly and never let me go.

I can't emphasize enough how perfect the tone and atmosphere is
in this film.

The cast in this one is really strong as well.  Sam Richardson leads the charge perfectly and does so with that disarming, genuine, and friendly charm he so terrifically exudes.  He is basically doing what makes him so funny and likeable but bringing it to a horror comedy and, in doing so, makes the perfect character to go along for the ride with.  He makes it look so easy as he is able to be funny, charming and, underneath it all, scared about what is really happening.  He also had tremendous chemistry with Milana Vayntrub—and she is no slouch in the film either.  Like Richardson, she is incredibly disarming and charming and had this authentic vibe to her as her character navigates the events occurring.  Both Richardson and Vayntrub had this great quality of feeling like the down-to-earth ones as the supporting players are more on the over-the-top side…and it worked.  Like so much of this film, it achieved this great balance of different levels of the character spectrum and they were able to blend terrifically.  It also helps that the more colorful and boisterous characters are performed by the very talented likes of Michaela Watkins, Michael Chernus, Cheyenne Jackson, Harvey Guillén, and so many more.

I was pretty excited to see Guillermo de la Cruz himself in this film.
What We Do in the Shadows  is such an amazing show and movie!

Concerning any drawbacks, I really didn’t see much.  The only one that I can really think of is the replay value of it.  Since the film has a bit of mystery to it, the replay value might be limited but, beyond this, Werewolves Within is a really great film that marries comedy and horror fantastically.  Add in two great leads and a tremendous supporting cast and the film is very, very entertaining.
