America:  The Motion Picture – 3 out of 5

I’m not the most patriotic man but the 4th just recently was upon us and America:  The Motion Picture felt like the appropriate thing to check out.  I’m very critical about this horribly corrupt and broken country I live in and this movie, from its trailer, promised a snarky, alternative look at how it was founded.  It looked amusing and like it was a lot of fun…and, for the most part, it is…kinda.

Is this really that far off from what we currently teach in our history
classes?

Oh, and Benedict Arnold is a werewolf.

As the young country of America works for its independence, Benedict Arnold (Andy Samberg) conspires with King James (Simon Pegg) in order to stop the country’s formation.  After assassinating his best friend Abe Lincoln (Will Forte), George Washington (Channing Tatum) must go to war and avenge his friend.  He recruits the rebel Sam Adams (Jason Mantzoukas), the Chinese-American scientist Thomas Edison (Olivia Munn), the fastest horseman in the colonies Paul Revere (Bobby Moynihan), native chief Geronimo (Raoul Trujillo), and the blacksmith John Henry (Killer Mike), in order to gather an army and defeat the British.

Honestly, a jacked George Washington who sounds like Channing Tatum
would make history cooler.

Edison is a woman in this and suddenly a lot
of men have strong emotional connections
to history.

On one hand, America:  The Motion Picture is a lot of fun.  It pokes a lot of fun at the problematic elements of this country’s patriotism.  It also folds in healthy doses of raunchy humor, pop culture references, and absurdist gags.  The movie itself comes roaring out the gate as it establishes the comedic tone and it's really funny. The film also boasts a great cast who are all doing a tremendous job and are wickedly entertaining and hilarious in their roles.  However, the movie isn’t an overall great comedy.  It isn’t a bad one but it, unfortunately, has a major weak point that keeps this one at a stable, average viewing experience.

I'm assuming Killer Mike just turned himself into a cartoon and injected
himself into the film and he didn't have to be animated.

The one major drawback I had with this movie is the fact the middle of the film does feel like it is taking a dip.  The jokes didn’t feel as funny and the story felt like it went on cruise control.  It wasn’t bad and I wasn’t bored or rolling my eyes at what I was watching but it wasn’t as enjoyable as when it first started.  That being said, the feature does pick up as it hits its final act and it started to feel very much like the beginning did, so it ended on a great note.

Sometimes the movie gives you these jokes and they are both stupid
and funny at the same time.

America:  The Motion Picture is really funny and very entertaining…and then it isn’t, and it is just kinda okay…but then it goes back to being great.  The beginning and the ending are very strong, but it sadly lacks heavily in the middle.  This ended up making the overall product feel just alright and it made what could have been a terrific comedy that has a lot of replay value just a decent comedy that was worth a one-shot watch.
