That film (The Cyclist) is a part of me….
-Hossain Sabzian (Close-up)
The Cyclist, a minor work that deals with major topics, is the fifth movie by Mohsen Makhmalbaf, one of the great filmmakers of the New Wave Moment of Iranian Cinema. He is known for his unpredictable substantial films on various subjects.
But with it, a vicious circle starts around him, of his exploitation. Venders, bookies, and the agent making money from his sweat charging it from the spectators, and some phony motivational speakers use him as an example to give hope to those spectators. Local officials suspect him as a spy and try to sabotage his show, including a wealthy businessman who bets against him. In a way, a small circus reflects a giant circus of the government, officials, and a society full of inhuman greedy people.
In the end, the agent runs off with the money, and a gypsy woman, wagers looking for another big bet, while others, including media, people, and his son, all are waiting for Nasim to stop his cycle. But even after the show overs, he still paddles his bicycle, like he has trapped in the endless loop, reflecting specifically a vicious circle of exploitation of Afghan refugees in Iran, but universally to anyone, anywhere.
