Movie Review - Summer of Soul

Gambar
As usual, a piece of Black history or history involving African Americans is forgotten or ignored. In 1969, the Woodstock Rock Festival was a music event that was one of the most iconic and legendary moments that has been remembered, recalled and invoked for decades. It only lasted three days and featured mostly white artists. However, that same year in 1969, there was another music festival, only two hours away in the Big Apple called the Harlem Cultural Festival at Mt. Morris Park. It was referred to as the "Black Woodstock," even though it started before Woodstock and ran for nearly two months. It featured predominantly, if not all African-American artists. The mayor of New York even made an appearance. The whole thing was filmed and was perhaps intended to be released theatrically or put on television. However, the people behind filming it couldn't sell the footage to any studio or network. Some people compare it to Amazing Grace (2019), the documentary about the con

Movie Review - Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar

Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo were nominated together for Best Writing (Original Screenplay) at the 84th Academy Awards, which was ten years ago. They were nominated for Bridesmaids (2011). It got another Oscar nomination but it wasn't up for Best Picture. Yet, it should have been because it was one of the best films of that year. Wiig and Mumolo are obviously good writers and well-trained comedians. Bridesmaids was such a high bar that they set for themselves that it would be hard for them or anyone to reach that level again. This film certainly doesn't. There are some funny things about it, but it doesn't feel like the smash that was Bridesmaids . This film is going for something different, tone-wise, than Bridesmaids . Strangely, this film feels like it's trying to be funny and that it's trying too hard. Bridesmaids had its obvious gags and over-the-top scenes but it was funny without feeling like it was trying to be. Bridesmaids felt more natural, more real-

The Suicide Squad [2021] - Movie Review

Gambar
Name - The Suicide Squad Director - James Gunn Runtime - 132 mins Platform - In Select Theatres and HBO Max James Gunn is a deranged maniac, in a good way. The Suicide Squad, the second 2021 offering by Warner Bros. and DC Comics, is quite easily both DC and James Gunn at their most unleashed. Now I realize that by stating that, I am alienating at least a quarter of the audience who loves Gunn for his PG-13 offerings for Marvel (Guardians of the Galaxy 1 & 2). This isn't Guardians of the Galaxy 1 & 2, not by a mile. If anything The Suicide Squad is Gunn's irreverence dialed up to 11, the weirdness and gross out humour of The Toxic Avenger coupled with a big budget Hollywood production, and a cast of characters who are truly expendable, because as the name The Suicide Squad suggests, not many people are walking out of this movie alive. Looking at the above roll call, anybody would be under the misconception that this is a large ensemble and thus narrative-wise it wou

"The Suicide Squad" a blast of weirdo energy, freewheeling characters, and lots of gore

The Suicide Squad (2021) This is what the DC Comics adaptation should have been the first time. An exhilarating trailer did not quite translate into an exhilarating final cut for 2016’s “Suicide Squad,” thanks to some common studio interference. Five years later, second’s time a charm. Whereas chaos reigned in the editing room for the hot mess that even director David Ayer himself disowned, writer-director James Gunn’s do-over/sort-of sequel “The Suicide Squad” is full of controlled chaos and feels exactly like the movie he wanted to make. It’s all very much Gunn, the offbeat dude who gave us “Slither,” “Super,” and the “Guardians of the Galaxy” movies  on the Marvel side, and he brings a freewheeling, rambunctious, weirdo energy—and lots and lots of over-the-top gore—that feels just right for this material. Viola Davis is back to being ruthless and nearly popping a blood vessel while playing government official Amanda Waller. She assembles a team of bad-to-the-bone prisoners for he
